whY is sweaRing wronG?

Swearing is WRONG, first of all, because God says that it is wrong. It's as simple as that. But God also graciously chose to explain some reasons why He is displeased by swearing. The Bible speaks about swearing in two different categories: First, misusing God's name, and second, using obscene, foolish, or coarse words.
Misusing God's name
God's name is holy and glorious. The Bible contains many, many verses that praise the name of the Lord. Psalms 92:2 says, "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name." You are personally insulting God when you misuse His name.Philippians chapter 2 speaks about how Jesus humbled Himself and sacrificed Himself for us on the cross. Because of His obedience and sacrifice, "God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11)
The name of Jesus is so glorious that the whole world falls to worship at just the sound of his name! The name of the Lord should cause us to worship and glorify Him. God takes the misuse of His name very seriously. He says, "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name." (Exodus 20:7) We should be thankful that misusing God's name no longer receives the death penalty, or many of us would be dead today!
Foolish words
God is also very serious about being careful to stay away from obscene, foolish, or coarse words. He says, "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." (Ephesians 5:3-5) It is wrong to swear because God has called us to be holy. It is wrong to misuse God's name because God's name is holy. It is holiness that forbids us to use words that are impure. God says that impurity, including saying impure words, is the same as idolatry. Idolatry means loving something else more than you love God. So, what is wrong with swearing? Swearing is impure and unholy. People who swear are degrading the holy, beautiful name of the Lord. People who swear are also degrading themselves. Those of us who are Christians are supposed to keep ourselves holy and clean before the Lord. And swearing leads us toward immorality, impurity, and idolatry. Instead of swearing, God says, there should be thanksgiving! A thankful, grateful attitude and outlook on life will keep you from wanting to swear in the first place. You will please your parents and please the Lord by keeping your words pure and holy.
